Hello, I Am Bearded Shepherd.

I am a 3D Artist and Multimedia Graphic Designer.
I have been a creator of League of Legends custom skins since December 2020 on Killerskins

My ultimate goal in creating custom skins is to build out my hand-painted portfolio for Riot Games based on their League of Legends and Runeterra IP. I do this because I’d love to work for them one day! People having fun and playing the custom skins I create is a positive byproduct. At no point do I wish to put my own work over Riot or make them lose out on profit. Should they ever create a skin that was clearly inspired after my work, it may be taken down from the website.

You can link your social medias here. Edit image settings inside the “Edit gallery”and paste the link under “Url”. You can also add more images ofc, most socials medias should already be uploaded as an image. Delete ones you don’t need.

KDA ALL OUT Gragas, an immensely requested skin has finally been created.
Merry Christmas! :D

HUGE thanks to Konradosj who helped me out with porting Wild Rift Gragas’s model into PC so that we could utilize his better proportions (he has proper legs now! pog). It was a lot of effort on his part retargeting animations from base PC Gragas to work. From there I helped with tweaking them to perfection.

Check out the artstation post for a more detailed look of the model and textures! https://www.artstation.com/artwork/9NWrxL

Credits

This is fully optional. If not needed, delete the “Credits” section.

  • Model, textures, and VFX (Some animations tweaked/created – emotes primarily) by Bearded Shepherd.
  • Animations by Konradosj (ALL including the initial laugh specifically before it was tweaked)
  • Special thanks to Yoru, Queen of Night for the video spotlight!

If you don’t need any of the following sections, delete the whole 3 sections starting with the gray line above this message (delete it!) and stop before the red line below important usage informtion (don’t delete it!).

If there are no known issues, delete the “Known issues” section

If there are no additional instructions needed and the basic installation tutorial on the bottom is enough, delete the “additional installation instructions” section.

Important usage information

If there is no information needed, delete the “important usage information” section.

Using this skin while playing against/with other Gragas that use base skin particles and animations will cause them to share the modified VFX and all of their animations will be in T-Pose. For optimal gameplay, it is best to have any and all Gragas using the base skin.

You can only use 1 of the image options but you can always add a video.

Preview

IMAGE OPTION1: Use this Single image if you have 1 preview image only.
If you have multiple images, delete this and use the option 2.

If you don’t have images, just put a video and use option 3.

IMAGE OPTION 2: Use this gallery if you have multiple preview images/gifs.
You can add them by clicking on the block below and then the “+” on the right toolbar. Your images will not display in the actual editor, that’s not a bug, so preview your post to make sure they’re there.
If you have only one image, delete this (IMPORTANT as it shows an error if it’s empty) and use option 1. If you don’t have images, just put a video.

VIDEO OPTION : Embed your Youtube preview video here. It has to be the short URL. You can still use Option 1 or 2 ofc.
Delete this if you don’t have a video and use option 1 or 2.

WHAT ARE SHADERS AND MATERIALS?

First we need to understand what a shader and material is in order to figure out what is actually happening.
A shader is responsible for how a material looks and for putting colors on the screen.

A material defines how light hits a surface. Inputs such as a diffuse (in other words an albedo or color map), normal map, metallic/smoothness or roughness can all influence how an object with a material appears when light hits it.

In maya, different materials can have different appearances in the viewport. Every material has a certain number and types of inputs that are supported within it. For League of Legends specifically, we are always dealing with a lambert material.

A StaticMaterialDef within the code exposes parameters (inputs such as diffuse, mask, Fresnel and its values, etc) to the artist which can be controlled normally through the interface which in this case is just whatever coding software we are using to view the code (visual studio code in this instance).
This is how riot defines parameters within a special material.

Such examples of materials be found in most Space Groove skins, Cafe Cuties, Cosmic/Dark Star, Ocean Song, and High Noon just to name a few.

A fresnel gives a highlighted appearance or even a glow effect emitting from it.
A screenspace texture means that wherever you move in-game, the texture will also move. When you are standing still, the texture will not move.

First step to using a material (Extract the wad files using obsidian)

Now that we have an understanding of what the difference is between shaders and materials and how they are using in League of Legends, lets start with inputting a material from one skin into our own. In this particular case, we are going to take the Winterblessed Warwick Prestige Edition tail material and slap it onto Ahri’s entire body.

To do this we must extract Warwick’s “warwick.wad.client” and grab all of the assets for his skin46. I personally like to extract the entire folder and delete whatever I don’t need as opposed to only extracting the particular assets that we will need.
Be sure to also extract “ahri.wad.client” of course.

open ahri’s bin using ritobin.cli and paste warwick’s materials

We need to open both Ahri’s “skin0.bin” located in “data > characters > ahri > skins.”
We also need to open Warwick’s skin46 bin located “data > characters > warwick > skins.”
After converting the bins using ritobin.cli, open both python files (.py) in Visual Studio code (or notepad).

Navigate to “skinMeshProperties: embed = SkinMeshDataProperties {” in both bins.
You only need to copy the “bodydiamond SkinMeshDataProperties_MaterialOverride” from Warwick directly underneath Ahri’s reflectionFresnelcolor.

If you’d like, you can rename “bodydiamond” to anything you would like. In this instance, I have named it “ahri_mat.

Paste Warwick’s static material definition section into ahri’s bin

Now that we have defined which material within maya is going to be using the diamond effect, we need to define the parameters of what that material is within Ahri’s bin.
So now we copy Warwick’s “StaticMaterialDef” named “Characters/Warwick/Skins/Skin46/Materials/Prestige_Tail_Diamond_inst” and paste it underneath the bracket below “mResourceResolver” in Ahri’s bin.

Make sure to change the diffuse texture in Ahri’s bin to her default texture!

Now we’re done with the bins!
Let’s move onto setting up the textures.

Setting up the texture mask

You will need to copy over Warwick’s asset > character file for his skin 46 to Ahri’s wad.

For this material we only have to deal with one mask. This particular mask only uses the green channel. The proper way to paint within these types of channels is to go in and select one of the following RGB channels and paint within it. You can also copy and paste black and white images to create a mask within the channel. Since we only have to worry about the green channel here, we can actually just color pick the green and paint within the RGB channel. Since I want Ahri’s whole body to be using this material, I’ve filled the entire texture with green.

Note: A material with a mask will not overlap with any other material that doesn’t have the link in the bin. “Ahri_mat” is the only material this diamond effect will take place. If I have another material for her hair or tails specifically without link then I would not need to cover those areas in black for this texture. Masks are usually only necessary if the entire character is one material OR you want to create gradient areas where the material will appear.

Setting up the model

Now we’re done with the texture!
Let’s move onto setting up the model.

Note: Most materials don’t need hardened edges like we will cover in this section. The materials from Ocean Song, Dark Star/Cosmic, and Space Groove can simply use softened and merged vertices. You only need to apply a separate material as we’ve covered in the tutorial prior. However, most diamond-like materials as you will find in most recent prestige skins like Janna, Warwick, and even KDA ALL OUT Ahri will need to have this part in order to look proper in-game. The best way to find out if a material needs this is to check the original skin that you are pulling from in Maya and see if the vertices are unmerged.

Once you’ve loaded your skin in maya, separate the object that you want to have the diamond material if you need to. (If you don’t want to separate, you can select by UVs). In this instance, I am making Ahri’s entire body a diamond material, so that won’t be necessary for me. Select ALL of the vertices within the object and detach (edit mesh > detach).

Once the vertices are detached, you can soften edges to double check that they are in fact detached.
Your model should look like it has hard edges across every polygon

Select the object and set the material to whatever you named it to in your bin. In my case, “ahri_mat“.

Now you will attach the skeleton and weight and proceed with the normal skin-creation process.
After exporting your skn/skl, you are ready to load in-game.

Particles and Bins Dictionary

This tutorial is meant as an overall guide for dealing with VFX/Particle via bins.

If you encounter any issues with this tutorial or you don’t understand part of it, you can ask for help on the Killerskins-Discord server
or you can contact me directly: Bearded Shepherd#0849

Infos

Note: As we continue to learn more about particles as a community through experimenting, this post will constantly be updated.
This is a comprehensive dictionary for the most common terms that are used in particles. We will cover most of the basics so that hopefully you can gain an understanding of how you can manipulate the visuals of particles towards your desires.

This post overall is very complicated as we cover a LOT of things, so if you feel confused about something, always refer back to the terms at the top of the page. Don’t be afraid to go try it out and experiment since that is how most of us have learned. Should you need help, ask for it in the #help channel in the Killerskins Discord.

Terms

vfxsystemdefinitiondata

Container. Think of this as a neighborhood. A “Q_Mis” for example.

This is what defines all of the particles (vfxemitter) listed under the ability. Anything outside of this will not be seen while the ability is in action.

Best term to search for specific abilities.

vfxemitter

Particle or particle system within a container (vfxsystemdefinitiondata).

Think of this as the different houses within the neighborhood. This can be sparkles, a trail, indicators, mesh, etc.

ParticleName

Another way by which you can search for specific abilities should “vfxsystemdefinitiondata” names be hashed.

Example, “particleName: string = “Graves_Skin18_recall_Hit.”

These can be renamed for organization purposes.

This is just like “vfxsystemdefinitiondata” just that it’s actually on the end of the system rather than the beginning.

emitterName

A name given for a vfxemitter which can be renamed as desired. Good to rename for organization purposes.

Examples include, “Flash, Burst, ground_decall, bokeh_dots.”

Their names can be random sometimes but it’s always named to make sense to whoever originally made the particle.

texture

Defines what texture will be used. Always in “.dds” format.

Most of the time they are perfect squares (1024×1024, 512×512, etc). It is also not uncommon for particles especially to not match a perfect square ratio.

textureMult

Typically found directly underneath a “texture: string.”

This is a texture which is multiplied over the texture it is listed under. If you know about the “multiply” blending mode in Photoshop, this is exactly what is happening.

This is ideal for being used over completely white textures in order to give a color. Useful for rainbow effects and scrolling textures!

Scrollrate

If a texture is seamless, what this does is that it tells that texture to move horizontally, vertically, or both. (listed here are the different types of scrollrates that you can find).

The values listed next to scroll rate define how quickly a texture moves.

mSimpleMeshName

Followed by an SCB or SCO mesh. This defines what mesh will be used in an emitter.

SCB

Mesh

SCO

Mesh with joint(s) and materials.

SKN/SKL

Mesh with a full skeleton and materials (standard export for League champions.

Used for animated meshes (Ivern’s root, Swain’s bird) if found in particle folder.

SkinScale

This determines the actual size of your champion in-game.

Changes per champ.

Materials

Controls how an object is viewed on screen.

Assigning a texture to a material applies the texture to all objects within that material.

Most older champions usually just have one material but you can actually add more if desired. Materials can be useful for when you want to have multiple pieces on a champion’s skin using different texture maps.

Recall assets are nearly always hidden meshes. Anything that won’t be visible on the champion throughout the game will be listed as hidden. Through the animation bin under skin0 (or desired skin), you can actually tell these meshes to appear during certain animations. You can find more on that in the animation tips (will be added later).

BLendmode

Just like in photoshop, this determines how an emitter is projected over the environment.

For regular texture files.
1 = Normal (Used when a particle has color information on the texture)
2 = Darkens
3 = Darkens
4 = Whiten (Sometimes a particle with color information and has a black background) Sometimes acts like overlay?
5 = Overlay like in photoshop.

Blending modes are different for SCB/SCOs and SKN/SKL.
SCB/SCO: 3 = Normal.
SKN/SKL: 1 = Normal, 3 = Inverts faces, 4 = Whiten,
Having “miscrenderflags” will change how meshes render. Usually inverts faces for blendmodes 1 and 3.

Birthcolor

This is a color code which is typically followed by four values. “{ 0, 0, 0, 1 }.”

The first three numbers are RGB values which can be calculated by dividing the color’s number with white (255).
Say for example I have R = 144.
144 divided by 255 = 0.5647058… My first value will be that number.

I will repeat the same process for the other two values in order to get my desired color.
0 = Black, 1 = White.

The final value after RGB is the alpha.
1 is opaque and 0 is Full opacity.

You can use Marcius’s program, “Hacksaw” to make recoloring fast and easy!
Doing math won’t be required at all. This is just useful information to help you understand how these values work!

Fresnel

Shader which gives a highlighted appearance to an object.

fresnel color = A color value given to a fresnel. Similar to birthcolor, this is followed by RGBA values.

VfxPaletteDefinitionData

This is a texture image which typically displays a varying amount of gradients. The emitter using this pulls a specific gradient from the image as opposed to the other types of coloring.

Rate

Determines the amount of particles that emit from the emitter.

Adjusting the rate on KDA ALL OUT Prestige Evelynn’s sparkles.
If the value is increased, more sparkles will appear.
If the value is decreased, less sparkles will appear.

dynamics

Gives a list of RGBA values, rotation, position, AND/OR times. Given RGBA values which define changes in color. Times which relate back to RGBA by defining when each value change occurs within the emitter’s lifetime.

IF these values are related to position, the particle will change position during its lifetime.
IF these values are related to rotation, the particle will change rotation during its lifetime.
You will be able to tell what these values are related to by reading what follows after “dynamics: pointer =”

erosion map

This is a map which defines how an ability, effect, or mesh appears.

It is typically a black and white texture. White represents what appears first while black is what appears last.

Sometimes this can also use a green, red, and even blue texture. Each erosion pattern is defined by their own color channels. So X has it’s own erosion pattern as well as the green. The full on green or red appears first while the darker shades appear last.
– In combination with a pink and yellow texture map, this is what is used to define what the erosion map is constrained to. The yellow is the strongest visibility.

normal map

As it is specifically used in League, this defines distortions for anything behind the actual effect. Commonly used for explosions and puddles. Has a shockwave or airy appearance.

numFrames: u16

Always found directly underneath a “texture: string” to define how many frames the animated texture will cycle through.

texDiv

Always found directly underneath a “texture: string” to define how many squares the image is divided into. For example, “2,2” defines two squares on the top half of the texture, and two squares on the bottom half of the texture, both equally divided. Mostly used for animated textures.

Particle colors

There are different types of ways that particles within League are colored. They can be colored through a texture or within the actual bin files. The different types of colors that you can see fall under the following, “birthColor, color: embed = ValueColor, VfxPalleteDefinitionData and particleColortexture.

Using this skin while playing against/with other Graves that use base skin particles and animations will cause them to share the modified VFX. For optimal gameplay, it is best to have any and all Graves using the base skin. Some of the following skins for Graves that share base VFX include: Hired Gun, Jailbreak, Riot, Crime City, and Cutthroat.

Note that using this skin will cause all base recalls to play the Star Guardian 2022 recall theme. This is just the nature of changing the sound for Graves since he doesn’t have a proper recall SFX. Sorry 🙁

Painting Values and Lighting

For handpainters, always keep in mind the top-down lighting that League has. You will always have a dark gradient traveling upwards. Without this, champions can appear flat in-game. The farther their body is away from us, the darker it gets! As you make you custom textures, be mindful of that.

Take a screenshot of your champion in Maya and place them in a test scene against a Summoner’s Rift background with both a color and grayscale to help you visualize what needs to be done.

Sometimes the values can differ depending on what you are comparing to. Darker colors will obviously be darker in value, so you have to be especially mindful of gradients in those. Lighter colors are usually easy to catch issues in. In this example of Graves, I plan to make a darker purple color for the lower half of his jacket to help with giving a more convincing lighting situation.

If you want to learn more about custom textures and other helpful painting tips, check out the Substance 3D Painter Tutorial I’ve written on the website:
